VMware Server and Fedora 8
From MyWiki
So I updated the kernel (to 2.6.23) Friday on my host OS, rebooted, and tried to reconfigure VMware server. The latter failed. After searching around, I found the article explaining what happened, and reverted back to (2.6.22). It is a very interesting read.
I am not sure about the conspiracy theory aspects of this article, but that is an annoying and disturbing change they made to the kernel.
After looking around, I found there is some sort of patch called vmware any-to-any, that will "fix" this, but it is a community supplied patch. I don't know how it is working. Descriptions on how it works or even how to install it are very scarce. On top of that, there seems to be still another problem with 64 bit systems running VMware server, and this needs yet another patch supposedly (though I have not found that one). I think the latter patch is against the kernel and the former against vmware server.
With few explanations, no instructions, and the fact that these are supplied by unknown parties, I figured it safer just to use the old kernel for now until VMware itself releases a new version of VMware server. I don't think any of the security vulnerabilities by not upgrading the kernel now are high risk. However, I am curious if anyone else has applied these patches and got VMware to run on the new kernel.

- Fedora 8 is 2.6.23 --Mfreemon 13:59, 17 December 2007 (CST)
- Regarding security vulnerabilities -- Fedora 7 is still being patched via the yum repositories, so there's no risk at all in not upgrading --Mfreemon 14:07, 17 December 2007 (CST)
- All of the servers in the pkilab VMfarm are RedHat EL4, which currently uses the 2.6.9 kernel.
