The most likely things in a computer to fail, according to the NetEng folks, are:

  1. Disk -- Remedy: RAID
  2. Power Supply -- Remedy: redundant power supplies
  3. Everything Else (motherboard) -- Remedy: be careful

Of course, there are also external factors:

  1. Network connectivity -- Remedy: geographically separate redundancy
  2. Power outage -- Remedy: ditto, plus UPS
  3. Physical interference (theft, forklifts accidents, etc) -- Remedy: be careful
